About Us

Mason Raymond is a rising first-year at Brown University’s Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) intending to concentrate in Science, Technology, and Society. Mason has been interested in science and medicine since he was young, but began his work in scientific research his freshman year of high school. Mainly in the field of computational biology, he has done research at SDSU, UCSD, and Stanford. Coming from a first-generation limited-income background himself, he was inspired to start StemMed Students to improve STEM opportunities for students coming from backgrounds like his own. Outside of science, Mason is interested in studying foreign language, having previously been an NSLI-Y scholar, and hopes to explore this passion through further study abroad. He plans to continue his work in StemMed Students into college, hoping to give back to his community.

Tiana is a rising junior at UC Berkeley pursuing a dual degree in Biology and Business, with a minor in Data Science. She is passionate about biotechnology, sustainability, marketing, and environmental science, and is deeply involved in her community. Tiana serves as a Project Manager for Business Careers in Entertainment (BCEC) and the Bay Area Environmentally Aware Consulting Network (BEACN), and as a general consultant for Atlas Strategy, where she leads teams of 10+ students on projects spanning biotech, marketing, finance, and sustainability initiatives. She has also led the @stemmedstudents TikTok and Instagram, growing their reach to over 250,000 impressions. This past summer, she interned at UCSD Health and Bioject, a startup developing biodegradable needles. Coming from an immigrant, low-income background, Tiana is committed to expanding access to STEM education and creating opportunities for underserved students, with the goal of empowering the next generation of changemakers.

Jayla Baker is a rising first-year student at Duke University, intending to major in Biology on the pre-med track, with strong interests in global health policy and cardiology. As a first-generation, low-income student, she is passionate about expanding equitable access to healthcare and STEM opportunities for underserved communities. Her experience includes bacterial genomics research through the Summer Science Program International and cardiothoracic suture training at Stanford University School of Medicine, Cardiothoracic Surgical Skills Summer Internship Program. Beyond research, Jayla serves as President of her school’s Black Student Union and, within StemMed Students, as Medicine Branch Lead and Vice President of DEIB, helping expand opportunities for underrepresented students in healthcare and research. Through her leadership, service, and scholarship, Jayla hopes to advance a future in medicine that integrates scientific innovation with equity-driven global health advocacy.

Kathy is a second-year Computer Science major at UC San Diego. She is an active member of her community, currently involved in Women in Computing (WIC), the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Brain Exercise Initiative (BEI). As part of a web development team in ACM, Kathy is helping create a website that supports students in starting their own urban gardens by providing recommended tools, tutorials, and on-campus garden listings. She is especially interested in software engineering and biotechnology, and is driven to explore innovations at the intersection of both fields. Kathy is also passionate about STEM education; she currently tutors middle and high school students through Arbor Tutors and will serve as a STEM instructor at Lavner Education this summer. Through StemMed Students, Kathy hopes to expand access to computing and STEM opportunities in underserved communities.

Jaime is a high school senior who's passionate about biotechnology and mathematics. He is active in ethnic clubs, such as the Asian American and Pacific Islander Club and the Si Se Puede Club. Jaime took an interest in Math after realizing the multiple applications it has across many fields in STEM. He has tutored and taught math to students whose second language is English. Jaime hopes to raise diversity and equality in the field of math. He is passionate about StemMed's vision and hopes to spread its message.

Danielle is a rising junior at UC Berkeley studying Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS), with a minor in Data Science. As a recipient of the Fiat Lux and Banatao Filipino American Scholarships, she is committed to expanding educational opportunities for low-income and underserved communities. At Berkeley, she is involved with Sports Analytics Group - Berkeley and Pioneers in Engineering (PiE) Robotics, where she explores the intersection of data science and engineering. She is particularly interested in advancing opportunities within sports analytics and the broader engineering field. Currently, Danielle is an intern with Cal Athletics, where she works on projects that bridge sports and data analysis. She is excited to continue this work with StemMed by developing resources and supporting programs (Roots in Research, StemMed Data Lab, etc.) that open doors for students’ futures.

Kwame is a high school junior with a strong interest in science, technology, and medicine. He is an active member of his school and local community, currently leading in STEM-focused organizations, including HOSA and his school’s robotics teams. Through these experiences, Kwame has worked on projects ranging from biomedical research and scientific presentations to collaborative engineering and design initiatives. He is especially interested in neuroscience and biomedical innovation, and is motivated by exploring how technology and research can improve human health. He is also passionate about STEM education and outreach, having participated in tutoring, volunteering roles that support younger students and peers. Through programs like StemMed Students, Kwame hopes to help expand access to high-quality STEM and medical education opportunities for students from underserved communities.

Mabel Kim is a first-year at UC Berkeley studying Society & Environment and Public Health. Her work spans environmental advocacy and education—from successfully lobbying the Colorado Department of Education to expand access to climate education to creating youth conservation education programs for multiple nonprofit organizations—she firmly believes in the power of education and how it can empower students to change the future. 

Hailey is a high school sophomore and a natural-born leader with a strong passion for helping others through STEM. Deeply interested in orthodontics, she is driven to pursue a career where she can make a meaningful impact on people’s health and confidence. She founded a club in affiliation with the American Red Cross, demonstrating both initiative and a commitment to service. In addition, she volunteers at her local science museum, where she enjoys inspiring curiosity and learning in others. She is passionate about carrying this same mindset into StemMed Students.

Jai is a high school sophomore dedicated to uplifting communities around him, with strong interests in cognitive sciences and math. Passionate about the intersection of STEM and academic accessibility, he hopes to expand equitable education and opportunities to all. As a member of the STEM Academy at his high school, Jai also engages with STEM — whether that means participating in math and robotics competitions around the state, engineering props and sets for Odyssey of the Mind and drama, or advocating for environmentally friendly practices to eventually reach net-zero waste in schools. Outside of STEM, Jai values learning about business through his involvement in DECA, and journalism as a news editor for his school publication, showcasing his dedication to representing his local community. Ultimately, through his diverse interests and initiatives like StemMed, Jai believes in giving back to the world to shape the future of STEM.
